Does Hinge have read receipts? What you can and can't see
No read receipts on Hinge, per third-party reporting. What Hinge's own help pages say about Your Turn, Your Turn Limits and Last Active instead.
Hinge does not have read receipts, according to third-party reporting: SlashGear says a sent message shows only a “Sent” label, and Mashable says Hinge confirmed to it that the app has none. Three Hinge features are often mistaken for one, and none of them, in Hinge’s own description, tells you a match has read your message.
This is an evergreen explainer. Most pages that answer does Hinge have read receipts stop at “no”. The more useful question is what the signals you can see actually mean. This desk read three Hinge help-centre articles, each marked last updated December 23, 2025, and Hinge’s September 2024 newsroom release on 15 October 2026. Hinge’s help centre answers direct requests with a 403, so those pages were read through a scraping fallback.
Does Hinge show when you read a message?
On every account read here, no indicator turns “Sent” into “Read”. None of the three help pages read describes one, and the two outlets that address it directly, SlashGear and Mashable, both say there is none. Silence in a Hinge chat is just silence.
The three signals people mistake for read receipts
| Signal | What Hinge’s page states | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Your Turn | Reminds you when it is your turn to reply; Hinge says this helps reduce ghosting | Whether your match has opened your message |
| Your Turn Limits | At the limit, daters cannot send or receive new Likes until they reply or end a chat; matches are not notified | The number of waiting chats that counts as too many |
| Last Active | Shows Active Now or Active Today on a profile in Discover, Standouts or Likes You | Anything, to a match: matches cannot see it |
Your Turn works on the person who owes the reply, not on you. The help page says it reminds you when it is your turn; if you are not ready, you can unmatch or hide the match and come back later.
Your Turn Limits is the one that sounds like surveillance and is not. Hinge’s help article says daters at the limit see a pop-up, and a progress bar above Matches as they approach it, and that “daters will not be notified if their match hits the limit”. So a stalled chat does not tell you your match is capped. The article says Hinge tested the feature and found it increased responses; the newsroom release dated September 18, 2024 put that at 20% higher responsiveness in the test.
Last Active is the closest thing to a presence signal, and Hinge keeps it away from conversations. Its help page says your matches won’t see your Last Active status, and that if you hide your own, you cannot see anyone else’s.
What is Your Turn Limits on Hinge, and is the limit eight?
Neither Hinge’s help article nor its 2024 release, as read, states a number. The figure of eight unanswered messages that circulates comes from Mashable’s September 2024 report, not from either Hinge page. The help article does say the limit applies to HingeX subscribers too. Whether hidden matches count towards it is not stated in anything read here.
Hinge’s release quoted Justin McLeod as founder and CEO in 2024; as we noted in our Overtone review, he has since left to build something else.
Hinge read receipts FAQ
Does Hinge show when you read a message?
No, by every account read here. SlashGear reports that a sent message carries only a Sent label, and Mashable says Hinge confirmed to it that the app has no read receipts. None of the three Hinge help pages this desk read describes a read indicator either, so a quiet chat tells you nothing about whether your message was opened.
Why doesn’t Hinge have read receipts?
None of the Hinge pages this desk read says why. SlashGear notes there is no official statement on why, or on any plan to add them. What Hinge has built instead pushes the other way: Your Turn reminds the person who owes a reply, and Your Turn Limits pauses new Likes for daters with too many conversations waiting on them, which Hinge says increased responses in testing.
What is Your Turn Limits on Hinge?
It is a cap on unanswered conversations. Hinge’s help page says that when too many people are waiting for your response, you cannot send or receive new Likes until you reply or end a conversation. Your matches are not notified when you hit it. The page gives no number for too many; the figure of eight comes from Mashable’s 2024 report, not from Hinge.
The short version
On every account read here, Hinge gives senders no read signal, and its newer features nudge the person who owes a reply rather than inform the one waiting. Hinge, like every app on this site, is for adults 18 and over.
