How does Hinge work? What decides who appears in your feed

Hinge shows you people chosen by a recommendation system. What Hinge's own page says goes into it: preferences, two-sided dealbreakers, your likes.

Hinge works by asking you to build a profile from photos or videos and Prompt answers, then showing you people in a Discover feed chosen by a recommendation system. Hinge says that system weighs your stated preferences, other daters’ preferences, two-sided dealbreakers and your past likes and matches, to judge the likelihood of mutual interest.

This is an evergreen explainer, and most answers to how does Hinge work stop at the walkthrough: sign up, like a photo, message. The more useful half is the feed itself. This desk read two Hinge-owned pages on 8 October 2026: How We Connect Daters, Hinge’s own account of its recommendation system, and its November 2025 newsroom post, Evolving Together. Hinge’s help centre blocked our request with a 403, so nothing below comes from it.

How does Hinge work, step by step?

Four moving parts. A profile, which Hinge requires to carry photos or videos and Prompt answers. Preferences, the age, distance and other settings you choose. The Discover feed, where you send likes. And the Likes You tab, where people who have already sent you one wait.

Hinge’s page is clear that the two directions are not equal for the system. Working only through Likes You gives it “limited information to learn from”; sending likes in Discover tells it who you are drawn to, and lets it show your profile to people it thinks are likely to match with you.

What decides who you see on Hinge?

Hinge says a single algorithm used to mean setting a few filters and doing most of the sorting yourself. What runs now, it says, is a collection of algorithms reading your preferences and your activity together. Here is every input the page names, and what it leaves out.

InputWhat Hinge’s page statesWhat it does not state
Compatibility settingsAge, distance, ethnicity, religion and relationship type guide who you are most likely to seeHow strongly each setting counts
Other daters’ preferencesTaken into account so suggestions reflect the likelihood of mutual interestHow a one-sided fit is ranked
Paid-only preferencesPaid subscribers can add height, family plans, lifestyle habits and politicsWhich plan carries them, or prices
DealbreakersYou are shown to each other only if both meet the dealbreakers either setHow many a free account may set
Past behaviourEvery like or match teaches it what you are drawn toHow far back it looks
Skipping fastMay lead it to assume that person, and others like them, is not your matchHow long a pause counts
Prefer not to sayHides you from people with a dealbreaker on that factorA full list of affected factors
The 2025 systemA deep-learning system that predicts who you might like and who is likely to like youWeights, a formula, or how Most Compatible or Standouts are picked

The last column matters. Scoped to the parts of the two pages read (the first was cut off in its subscriptions section): neither gives weights, a ranking formula or any account of how Most Compatible or Standouts are picked.

What changed in 2025?

The newsroom post, dated 10 November 2025, says Hinge rolled out global changes to the core recommendation system in Discover earlier that year, which dates it to 2025 and no closer. Hinge says the deep-learning update contributed to “a double-digit increase in matches overall”. That is Hinge’s own claim and it gives no figure. The same post says Hinge nudges daters to loosen filters such as distance, and explains in the app how dealbreakers and prefer not to say affect who can see them.

How to shape your Hinge feed

Hinge’s page lists six habits, and they read as instructions to the model. Like with purpose: too many likes and it “can’t tell what you truly want”, too few and it has nothing to learn from. Send likes rather than only reading Likes You. Look past the first photo before skipping. Loosen distance or age if your priorities have shifted. Know what prefer not to say costs you. And update your Prompts and photos, which Hinge says many people stop doing after their first week.

Profiles are also where Hinge’s other 2025 tools sit, from Prompt Feedback in January 2025 to Match Note in February; we covered why prompt-based profiles became table stakes, and how other apps sell AI matchmaking features.

Hinge FAQ

How does Hinge work?

You build a profile that Hinge requires to include photos or videos and Prompt answers, set your preferences, then send likes to people in your Discover feed or answer the ones waiting in Likes You. Who appears in Discover is picked by a recommendation system that, Hinge says, reads your preferences, other daters’ preferences, your dealbreakers and your likes.

How does the Hinge algorithm work?

Hinge says it is not one algorithm but a recommendation system that combines several, using your stated preferences and your activity. Since 2025 it has run on deep learning built to predict who you might like and who is likely to like you back. Neither Hinge page, in the parts read here, gives the weights or a ranking formula.

Is Hinge free to use?

Yes, there is a free version. Hinge’s page calls the free app experience essential and says everyone deserves a chance at connection without paying. Paid subscribers get extra preferences, height, family plans, lifestyle habits and politics, and Hinge says some tools stay premium because unlimited dealbreakers for everyone would shrink every dating pool.

Do dealbreakers on Hinge work both ways?

Yes. Hinge says it will only show two people to each other if both meet the dealbreakers that either of them set, using wanting kids as the example. So a dealbreaker narrows who you see and who sees you. Answering prefer not to say on a factor such as family plans also hides you from people with a dealbreaker on it.

The short version

Hinge’s page names its inputs but not their weights. A feed tuned to mutual interest is still a feed, and no system guarantees compatibility. Before you trust a match, our guide to what happens if you fail Hinge selfie verification covers what its badge does and does not tell you. Hinge, like every app on this site, is for adults 18 and over.
