What happens if you fail Tinder's Face Check

If you fail Tinder’s Face Check, the video selfie is still deleted promptly, but Tinder keeps two audit images and the pass-or-fail result until 90 days after the account closes, or one year if it is banned. Tinder’s own FAQ states those clocks; it states no review time, no retry limit and no lockout rule.

This is a review of a failure path, not of an app. Nobody here failed a scan. What we did was read the two Tinder pages that govern the question, on 15 September 2026: the Face Check Scan FAQ and the 22 October 2025 press release on the US rollout. A third, the help-centre article the FAQ links as Age Checks at Tinder, returned 403 to us and is not relied on below.

What Tinder’s Face Check is actually checking

The FAQ describes four tests on the video selfie: a real, live person; no digital alteration; a face that matches the profile photos; and, via a number Tinder calls a FaceVector derived from the facial geometry it calls a FaceMap, no other account using the same likeness. Clear all four and upload a matching solo photo, and the Photo Verified badge is applied. As of 22 October 2025, Tinder said Face Check was required for all new users in seven countries and California, with more US states to follow; Match Group said it planned to bring it to other portfolio apps in 2026. We have seen no later map, so that is the release’s statement, not today’s coverage.

What happens to your data if you fail Tinder’s Face Check

This is the part the how-to pages skip and the FAQ answers. The clocks below are its own wording, and they apply to a fail as much as a pass: the FAQ keeps “the results of the Photo Verification process (i.e., successful or not)”.

A fail is therefore a record, not a non-event: the result and two frames of your face sit on Tinder’s AWS servers, per the FAQ, for at least 90 days after you leave.

What Tinder does not tell you

Neither page we read states how long a review takes, how many times you can retry, or whether the account is usable while a scan is pending. That absence is scoped to those two pages; the help-centre article that would not open to us may say more.

The one line on a fallback is the FAQ’s: your FaceMap “may be used to help verify your age, for example, as part of an ID verification check”, with a pointer to Age Checks at Tinder. We could not read that page, so we will not describe what an ID check involves or when it triggers. How long does Tinder selfie review take, according to the how-to pages

The rank-four result for this query is a SwipeStats blog post, and it is confident where Tinder is silent. It says most reviews clear in 5-30 minutes, that 24-48 hours is common when extra processing is needed, that manual review can take several days to a few weeks, and that you are “completely locked out” meanwhile. It suggests the web version, a cache clear, a resubmit, and support after 48-72 hours, and warns a full reset can trigger the same loop. None of those figures is sourced to Tinder, and although the post discusses retention, the parts we could open do not give the 30-day, 90-day or one-year clocks above.

Pros and cons of the failure path as designed

Verdict

Set against the field, this is better than most. When we covered Ember’s stated ID check before matching, the retention question had no public answer at all; Tinder’s has three numbers and a carve-out. What holds the score down is the thing the query is about: a person whose scan did not clear wants to know what happens next, and Tinder’s public pages answer only what happens to the frames of their face.

Partly. The FAQ says the video selfie is promptly deleted, but two audit images, the pass-or-fail result and an age estimate are kept until 90 days after the account is closed, and the FaceMap and FaceVector are kept for the life of the account and deleted within 30 days of closure, subject to a legal and safety carve-out.

What happens if you get banned from Tinder after verification?

The retention clock gets longer. Tinder’s FAQ says audit images, the verification result and the age estimate are saved for one year if the account is banned, rather than 90 days after an ordinary closure, and that Verification Data may be shared with Match Group affiliates, where law permits, to identify and ban violating accounts.

Nothing here is a verdict on whether Face Check makes anyone safer; the release’s 60% and 40% figures are Tinder’s own and we cannot test them. Coverage here is for adults; the apps discussed require users to be 18 or over.
